EcoAGN recycled polyester swimwear guide

Recycled Polyester vs Polyester in Swimwear: What Is the Difference?

Recycled polyester and virgin polyester are both polyester fibres; the main difference is the source of the raw material used to produce them. Recycled polyester uses recycled feedstock, while virgin polyester is produced from new petrochemical raw material.

Is recycled polyester still polyester?

Yes. The final fibre is still polyester. The word “recycled” describes the material source, not a completely different textile category.

Does recycled polyester feel different?

Not necessarily. Feel depends on yarn, knit, fabric weight, finish and blend. Recycled content alone does not determine softness or stretch.

Why is elastane added to swimwear?

Swimwear needs stretch and recovery. Polyester is often blended with elastane or spandex to provide the flexibility needed for a close-fitting garment.

What does recycled polyester tell you about sustainability?

It tells you something specific about material sourcing. It does not automatically answer every environmental question about manufacturing, transport, durability or end-of-life.

Why does certification matter?

Certification can add verification to material claims. For recycled content, standards such as GRS can provide traceability and chain-of-custody requirements.

What does EcoAGN use?

EcoAGN's active swimwear product pages currently list:

  • EU: 88% recycled polyester and 12% elastane.
  • US: 81% recycled polyester and 19% Lycra® spandex.

Product pages also state GRS recycled-content certification and OEKO-TEX® Standard 100.

Is recycled polyester better for swimwear?

That depends on what you mean by “better”. If the question is whether it reduces reliance on virgin polyester feedstock, recycled polyester addresses that specific point. Performance and durability still depend on the actual fabric construction.

Can recycled polyester be recycled again?

Textile recycling at end-of-life is a separate issue from whether the starting fibre was recycled. Fibre blends, garment construction and available recycling infrastructure all affect what happens later.

Frequently asked questions

Is recycled polyester plastic?

Polyester is a synthetic polymer. Recycled polyester uses recycled material as feedstock instead of only virgin raw material.

Is recycled polyester biodegradable?

No. Recycled polyester should not be treated as biodegradable simply because it is recycled.

Does recycled polyester mean 100% recycled fabric?

No. Check the actual composition percentage on the product page.
